An autographed manuscript playtext of El Castigo sin Venganza (Punishment without Vengeance) in the hand of Lope de Vega. The manuscript contains numerous authorial corrections, interlineations, and emendations. The recto of the penultimate leaf (3₁₉) contains the license signed by Pedro de Vargas Machuca and dated May 9, 1632. The play was first printed in 1634.

Collation: Paper codex ; fol. iii + 62 leaves + fol. iii ; 1-2²⁰ chi² 3²⁰. Contemporary arabic foliation in the upper-right corner of most leaves, falling into three main sequences, with blanks between each (, 17, , 16, , 16, ). All leaves unsigned.
Layout: Written in a single column, with the number of lines per page varying. Some lines are set off by sententiae markers.
Script: Cursive, in the hand of Lope de Vega.
Binding: Bound in ca. 19th-century maroon goatskin panelled and tooled in gilt and blind. The spine is panelled and tooled in gilt. Housed in a tan cloth box.
Provenance: Formerly owned by George Ticknor (1791-1871).
Acquired by the BPL in 1895 via donation from Anna Eliot Ticknor. A note from her is tipped-onto the recto of the third flyleaf, at front.
